Liberty cap mushroom

The psilocybe semilanceata is a coveted mushroom that everyone seems to enjoy, aka liberty caps. In temperate climates, the psilocybe semilanceata grows across the globe in grasslands where sheep, horses and cows graze. Lawns that are taken care of and in fertilization with fertilizer are also used.

While this mushroom does not grow directly on the dung, it is where the dung enriched soil is located with sedge grass. Usually at the base of the outer edge of grass clumps. A common grass to find this species growing in is Fescue grass. In the Pacific Northwest USA, it is very prevalent and generally fruits in the fall.

Also, in Oregon and in Canada, as well as the state of Washington, this species particularly thrives. In many places in the world, these freedom cap shrooms are also growing and this author personally enjoyed a wonderful experience of mushroom hunting in the northern Pyrenees of Spain and France to find these mushrooms along with psilocybe hispanica.

There is also an unusual orange variety of psilocybe semilanceatas that grows in Spain and the PNW USA. In our gallery, there are a few photos of this orange strain. My Spanish friend who has been hunting these mushroms for decades also tells me that from time to time he sees albino and several different shaded shades of semilanceatas.
